MLK Day 2020: Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.
MLK Day 2020 How will YOU honor Dr. King?
When I was younger, I have to admit, I appreciated MLK because it was a day off school or work. Sometimes, it’s nice to have a “free” three-day weekend. As I’ve gotten older, I understand the purpose of the holiday and now try and make a difference in some small way every year.
In honor of MLK day today, what is your purpose in life? What are you completely devoted to that you would move mountains to succeed? What are you bothered by in the world that you know you must do something to make a positive change?
We all have the greatness within us that MLK did, but it doesn’t mean we have to be nationally or internationally known to have a positive effect on others. Every day, you can make a difference in the lives of those around you.
It’s never too late to start and here are some suggestions in how you can make a difference.
Volunteer. Many non-profits couldn’t do the work they do without people like you. I volunteer for Paws for Life. I started out as a foster and helped save four feral cats and get their momma spayed. Four out of 5 were girls. Each cat can create 30,000 cats, so I helped save up to 120,000 feral cats from being born. I consider that quite an accomplishment. I’m not kidding when I say that small steps add up!
Lend a Hand. How can you help someone in need? Rake leaves or shovel snow for a neighbor? Bring soup to someone who is sick? Help an elderly person around the house? You might not have the time to volunteer regularly, but you can help out in small ways that will mean a lot to the receipient.
Lift someone’s spirits. Let someone in during traffic, say a prayer for someone, or simply share a smile with a stranger. All of these things make the day brighter for not only you, but the person you’re helping. Many of these things you can do for free.
Find your passion. Discover what makes you tick and where you want to create, make change, or do something. Then make it happen. Instead of another night of TV or surfing the internet, how can you make a dream happen or make a difference?
Be kind. It takes so little to be kind but we seem to have lost a lot of that in the world today. Take a moment to stop and see how you can be kind. If someone is mean to you, can you stop the chain and vow not to act the same way? What little thing can you do to show kindness to someone?
