Are You Falling for Wishful Thinking?
Are you someone who flits and floats from one healer or healing modality to the next? Do you get annoyed when something doesn’t change instantly? Learn how to release wishful thinking. In other words, let go of living in a fantasy world of what didn’t happen.
Why I Wrote This Episode
I received an email from a Clear Your Clutter Inside & Out listener that said:
“I listen to every organizing, clutter and hoarding podcast or TV show in search of another magic word or phrase. And, of course, every book. I am hoping you have another magical word to help me think better.”
I wrote back: “I do not have a magical word that I can recommend. It has not been my experience that people find an idea or phrase and then the clutter easily disappears. While it is different for every person, most people need to get to the root of clutter and that takes some time and self-examination. I wish it were easier, but that hasn’t been my experience personally or professionally.”
I’ve worked with people before who try every healer, every professional organizing method and she still purchased and purchased and purchased. At the root, in my opinion, was she had never grieved the loss of her husband. He died and she was left with small children. Shopping was her way of trying to fill that void and emptiness inside. Things and material goods aren’t going to fill that void.
With shows like Hoarders, we see 48 minutes of stuff becoming magically transformed. That isn’t the reality. You don’t see the team and multiple weeks spent transforming a home.
Steps to Take
It’s easier to wish for one word to change everything instead of actually doing the work. Expecting things to change in an instant is also something that our society has become addicted to.
How do we let go of thinking that one word, event, or encounter is going to change everything? Some of my suggestions to release wishful thinking:
Become aware. How is your life being affected by wishful thinking? What are the negatives of having too much clutter? What has clutter cost you: time, relationships, peace of mind?
Identify. What exactly are you afraid of? Sometimes we have this nebulous fear that has just grown or isn’t clear. Name it to reclaim it. I had a fear for a really long time about being alone. When I was able to verbalize it, I made an effort to go out and meet people and make friends.
Be like our Joey Antonio and Athena, curious cats. Get curious about what thoughts generate your fear, where do you feel the fear, and how do you react to it? Again, be an observer of what is going on. Don’t judge yourself, be neutral so you can receive valuable information.
Become present. Your point of power to change is in the present moment. You can’t change the past and you can’t control the future. Realize what you can do in the moment to course correct.
Do the work. It can be tough, but personal growth allows you to have amazing breakthroughs in your life. Don’t wake up wondering why you’re life hasn’t changed year after year without you taking any action. It’s a lot harder to hold onto your pain, and it takes a tremendous amount of energy. Once you face the music, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to walk through the fire.
Feel your feelings. Don’t stuff or hold back your emotions. Scream cry, kick and shout…whatever it takes. I go into a lot more detail in this YouTube episode.
Get a perspective. We tend to focus too much on the negative, so by looking at all the options, you often realize that you’re making a big deal of nothing. There are so many things that can happen that it’s impossible for you to predict.
If your afraid of what may happen when you dig deep or worried that something else isn’t going to work… your mind may think up obstacles. You oversleep to attend the energy healing class you have always wanted to. If you remove self-doubt and uncertainties from your mind and remain confident, you can lessen wishful thinking.
